UN's 'List of Shame'
What is the UN's 'List of Shame':- In 2001, United Nation Security Council Resolution 1379 called on the UN Secretary-General to identify and list parties(Decision-making body ) "involved in conflict" who recruit and use children. Since then, the list has been attached to the UN Secretary-General's annual report to the Security Council, which contains information on "patterns of crimes and crimes affecting children in armed conflict".
In 1996, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict was created, which identified six serious crimes to assess the impact on children during conflict.
Any offender committing any of the following five crimes is automatically included in the list:- 1. Recruitment and use of children. 2. Murder and maiming of children. 3. Sexual violence against children. 4. Attacks on schools and hospitals. 5. Kidnapping of children. 6. Keeping civilians, including children, away from humanitarian aid.
The United Nations says that "it is prohibited under the Fourth Geneva Convention and its additional protocols and may amount to a crime against humanity or a war crime."
Why in the news :- In the year 2024, the United Nations has put the armed organizations of the Israeli army, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad together in the 'List of Shame'.
